SVP Associate & Labor Relations, Macy's
Mike Zorn is a seasoned senior human resources executive and labor relations thought leader with more than 30 years of continuous success in leveraging corporate resources to solve customer problems and achieve business goals at the Fortune 100 level. Over the years, Mike has been a much-sought-after mentor to numerous senior executives and leaders of established and startup businesses. Now with his experience as a visionary and creative leader, he brings all his talent and wisdom gained from the executive world and focuses on offering coaching and consulting to help other business leaders solve actual problems and get results.
Mike's career is a story of leading numerous large-scale mergers, acquisitions and consolidations, including consolidating eleven divisions under Macy’s unified brand, a feat of remarkable HR thought leadership and outstanding negotiation and operational management skills. He has unified diverse business functions in nearly a dozen businesses, including scheduling and staffing, engagement, communication, loss prevention, store human resources and labor relations. Known for his ability to define purpose, align structural systems, leverage individual talents, and build collaborative relationships throughout all tiers of a company, his areas of expertise span the entire spectrum of business and HR development, encompassing change management, internal marketing strategy, employee engagement, process mapping and redesign, organizational design and development, performance management and employee retention.
As a thought leader, Mike has been a frequent speaker on associate motivation and engagement, culture and process improvement, strategic planning and labor relations. He gives regular speeches at the National Retail Federation, and he has delivered keynotes at the Kronos World Symposium, the Practicing Law Institute, and the Human Resources Policy Association, as well as at Macy’s leadership conferences. Through SCORE Cincinnati and MORTAR Cincinnati, he has lent his thought leadership to business leaders on how to grow and achieve sustainability.
Mike previously served as the Vice President of Associate and Labor Relations at Macy’s Inc., a $26 billion Fortune 100 major retailer, for which he managed a budget of $150 million dollars with responsibility for delivering leadership, direction and tactical management for all 11 company divisions within Macy’s. Leading three HR teams – the Associate Relations, Labor, Internal Communication and Associate Engagement teams – he oversaw a field team of 100 people and a central team of 80 people that collectively managed reports from 1,200 employees. A three-time recipient of Macy’s Make Magic Award for innovation and team work, Mike was recognized as Macy’s Customer Engagement Leader of 2015, and he was selected to participate in the Cincinnati Leaders Program.
As Macy’s HR strategy leader, Mike worked closely with other senior leaders to design and implement companywide initiatives, while also holding responsibility for mentoring key employees on conflict resolution, career growth, and policy and procedure interpretation. He led several mergers and acquisitions, and was part of the strategic management team that facilitated the acquisition and consolidation of May Company, leading to nearly doubling Macy’s assets. Among his numerous other achievements that made or saved Macy’s Inc. millions of dollars, Mike also introduced an enterprise-wide employee resolution system, developed a progressive scheduling system, developed a nationally adopted internal dispute resolution process and negotiated a nationwide contract for alarm systems.
Mike began his executive leadership career with Macy's in 1983, as Director of Employee Relations, West Division, in San Francisco. Prior to becoming VP of Associate and Labor Relations, he served as the Group Vice President of Human Resources, leading all human resource objectives and strategies across more than 100 stores and managing a budget of over $8 million. Cultivating his deep expertise within the fields of HR and labor relations, he led labor relations and employee litigation efforts, launched initiatives to reduce risks from employment-related disputes, and oversaw due-diligence to ensure post-acquisition employee integration of Broadway Stores and Liberty House.
Mike is a former chairman and current board member of the Greater Cincinnati YMCA; and he is currently the chairman of NRF Employment and Labor Committee, advisory member with the Labor Policy Board and the Strategy Committee YMCA, assistant chairman for the Greater Cincinnati Women's Crisis Center, chairman of the Human Resource Committee Board of the National Retail Federation, and member of the boards of Cincinnati Contemporary Art Museum and Human Resource Policy Association. He is also a member of the California Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the HRPA Labor Board.
Mike holds multiple Executive Coaching certifications from the Center for Executive Coaching and Sherpa University, in addition to holding a certificate from the Harvard Negotiation Program. He also holds certificates in Global Labor Relations, Mentor Coaching, and other skills. Mike obtained his Juris Doctorate from Lincoln Law University, and his Bachelors of Arts in Economics and Political Science from California State University, Sacramento.
